School 1: The Abandoned Girl  ·  Episode 10

The orphan spirit and how to break free.

You are not an orphan scraping for approval. You are an heir receiving what was always yours.

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

Romans 8:15 NIV  ·  Anchor verse
Before we begin

The orphan spirit is not about being physically abandoned as a child. It is about the internal posture of someone who has never fully received the security of being unconditionally claimed.

You can grow up with both parents and carry an orphan spirit. You can be surrounded by people who love you and still feel fundamentally alone. You can be in a room full of people and feel like no one actually knows you. That is the orphan spirit, and it is one of the most common and least named wounds in the church today.

What we confront in this episode is not a behavior and not a pattern. It is a spirit. A spirit that has been operating quietly inside you for so long that you may have confused it for your personality, and you have been making decisions out of its voice for years without knowing there was another voice available to you. This episode is the work of telling the two voices apart, and then choosing.

Part 1

What the orphan spirit is

The orphan spirit is the internal operating system of a person who has not yet received the revelation that she is fully, unconditionally and permanently loved by God. It is not an intellectual deficit. You can know the theology and still not have received the reality.

The orphan spirit functions on fear, on scarcity, on the deep background hum that says: I have to earn my place. If I stop performing, I will be removed. If I am truly known, I will be left.

Watch how it operates, because it hides inside things you have been calling strengths.

It operates through scarcity. There is never enough time, enough resources, enough love, enough rest. Even when there is plenty in front of you, you cannot fully receive it, because the orphan part of you is already calculating what you will need tomorrow.

It operates through urgency. Everything has to be solved this minute. The constant background tension in your nervous system says that if you rest, you will fall behind, and if you pause, the world will move on without you.

It operates through performance. Love must be earned, belonging must be earned, approval must be earned. You have built a life around being useful and impressive, because the orphan in you does not yet believe you would be loved if you stopped producing.

It operates through isolation. You do not ask for help. You do not let people see your need. You carry everything alone, even the things that were never meant to be carried alone, and you have been calling the isolation strength.

And it operates through hypervigilance. Always scanning for the next thing that could go wrong, always ready to brace, because the orphan has never been able to settle into the safety of Someone else being in charge of her wellbeing.

Think about this. If you see yourself in three of those five patterns, you are not looking at your personality. You are looking at a spirit that has been running your operating system for as long as you can remember. It makes you a competitor rather than a collaborator. It makes generosity hard because resources feel scarce. It makes rest feel dangerous because worth is measured by productivity. And it makes intimacy terrifying, because being fully known means being fully available to be rejected.

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

Romans 8:15 NIV
Part 2

Name it before you fight it

In the very first episode of this school we learned that what happened to you has a name, and that once you can name it, you can begin to heal it. Here is where that principle becomes a weapon.

When Jesus met the tormented man living among the tombs, He did not cast the spirit out in silence. He demanded its name first.

"Then Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' 'My name is Legion,' he replied, 'for we are many.'"

Mark 5:9 NIV

And when God placed Adam in the garden, the first assignment of rule He ever gave a human being was naming.

"He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name."

Genesis 2:19 NIV

Naming is not description. Naming precedes authority. That is the consistent pattern across all of Scripture, from the garden to the tombs. What you can name comes under your authority the moment you speak it, and what you cannot name continues to rule you from the shadows.

So say it plainly. This is not my personality, and it is not my work ethic or my independence. This is an orphan spirit, and it has been speaking to me in my own voice for years. Until you name it, it names you. It has been calling you unwanted, unclaimed, alone and responsible for your own survival. The moment you name it instead, the authority changes hands. You are no longer a woman being described by a spirit. You are a daughter describing the thing that is about to lose its place.

Part 3

The promise Jesus made

Jesus addressed the orphan spirit directly, on the night before He was crucified, while preparing His disciples for the season when He would no longer be physically present with them.

"I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you."

John 14:18 NIV

He saw the human capacity for the orphan spirit. He knew His followers would be tempted to live as if they had been abandoned, to hustle for what He had already promised, to forget who their Father was. So He made a promise meant to cover every season that would come after Him, and the promise has not expired. It is for every daughter of God alive today, including you.

You have not been left as an orphan. Whatever was taken from you, whatever was chosen against you, whatever happened in your childhood that taught you to carry everything alone, none of it has the final word on whether you are alone. The Father has been present through all of it, pursuing you, preparing the very moment you would finally turn around and let Him claim you as His own.

The opposite of the orphan spirit is not confidence. It is not success, and it is not a healed childhood. It is adoption. It is the experiential, not just theological, reality of being claimed by a Father who never changes His mind about you.

Abba is the word a small child uses for her father. Not the formal word, the intimate one. The one used in the middle of the night when you wake up scared, the one used when you run to the safe person without thinking. God is that Abba, and the spirit of adoption means you get to run to Him that way, without formality, without earning your way in first. Just the running, just the cry, just the arms that were already open before you arrived.

"Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father.' So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir."

Galatians 4:6-7 NIV

All these years I was waiting for God to change my life while God was waiting for me to become willing to change.

Part 4

From orphan to heir

"Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ."

Romans 8:17 NIV

An orphan scrapes for what she needs. An heir receives what has already been prepared. An orphan performs to justify her presence. An heir belongs before she does anything. An orphan lives in fear of being removed. An heir rests in the security of a covenant that cannot be revoked.

This is not just beautiful language. It is a description of two entirely different internal operating systems, and the one you are currently running determines every single thing about how you move through the world.

If the orphan spirit runs on scarcity, urgency, performance, isolation and hypervigilance, the daughter spirit runs on the opposite of each, and the difference is felt in the body before it is understood in the mind.

The daughter operates from provision. There is enough, because the Father who owns the cattle on a thousand hills has more than enough for His daughter, and His love does not divide when it is given. It multiplies. Each of His daughters receives the whole of it, not a fraction.

She operates from peace. Not everything has to be solved this minute, because a Father has been working on her behalf in the moments she could not see Him. She can rest and she can sleep deeply, because the world is not depending on her vigilance to stay safe.

She operates from identity. Her belonging is not contingent on her performance, so she can serve from love and work from gladness, because the work is no longer the source of her worth. The work is the expression of a worth that was settled before she ever lifted a finger.

And she operates from belonging and trust. She is in a family, she was never meant to carry her life alone, and she no longer scans for the next disaster, because she has settled into the protection of a Father whose timing she cannot always predict but whose character she has come to know.

The healing of the abandonment wound is, at its deepest level, this journey from orphan to heir. From performing for a place to resting in one that was already given.

Part 5

The worth that nothing changes

The orphan spirit has been quietly convincing you that what happened to you lowered your value. The Word of God says the opposite, and everyday life gives us pictures that make the truth hard to argue with.

A hundred dollar bill that has been trampled, folded, dropped in the dirt and left on the ground for a week is worth exactly what a freshly printed one is worth. The treatment of the bill does not change the amount printed on it. The value was set by the one who issued it, not by anyone who handled it afterward.

A diamond crusted in dirt is still a diamond. Its value does not depend on whether it is currently displayed in a jeweler's window or lost in the back of a drawer. The value was placed in it when it was formed, not when it was discovered.

An apple seed thrown into a bag of pear seeds is still an apple seed, no matter how long it sits in the wrong bag. Given the right soil and water, it will still grow into the very tree it was made to be.

The same is true of you. The treatment you received from people who did not know how to hold you did not change what God placed in you when He formed you. The seasons you spent in the wrong soil did not change what was planted in you before the foundation of the world. You are not unlovable. You are under-recognized. You have been loving in environments that could not return what you were giving, and the absence of the return was never evidence of your unworthiness. It was only evidence that you were planted in soil too shallow for the depth of you. The wound is information about the environment, not information about your value.

We opened this entire school with a verse, and it returns here on purpose.

"Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me."

Psalm 27:10 NIV

John writes that the Father has lavished His great love on us, that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are. Lavished is a generous word. Not given, not offered. Poured out in extravagant measure, without restraint. The orphan spirit has been telling you for years that the lavishing was for someone else. It was for you. It has always been for you, and the only thing standing between you and the experience of it has been a spirit you have now named.

Questions to sit with this week

One. Of the five orphan patterns, scarcity, urgency, performance, isolation and hypervigilance, which one have you been mistaking for your personality, and what would it cost you to lay it down?

Two. Do you have the theology of being God's child without the experiential reality of it? What is the gap?

Three. What would change in your daily life if you operated from the posture of an heir rather than an orphan?

Four. When was the last time you cried Abba to God? Not a formal prayer. Just the running?

Five. What is one area where you have been scraping when you were actually meant to receive?

Facts, not lies

Years ago, in the deepest pit of the season I now call my dark ages, I sat down and wrote out what I called facts, not lies, about me. The orphan spirit had been speaking lies over me for so long that I had forgotten there was another voice available, so I wrote the truth line by line and read it back to myself, alone in my room, again and again, until the words became louder than the despair. I did not know it then, but I was learning the practice the daughter spirit is built on, which is speaking the truth back to the lies until the truth wins. I am giving you the same declaration now, because the woman laying down the orphan spirit needs a new vocabulary, and this is the one the Lord gave me.

I am a plan, not a mistake. I am a solution, not a problem. I am a royal, not a pauper. I am a daughter, not an orphan.

I will find reasons, not excuses. I will be a stepping stone, not a burden. I will empower, not belittle. I will create, not destroy.

I have a love, not a religion. I have a God, not a stone. I have a future, not a death bed. I have a destiny, not a wish.

I live by faith, not by sight. I live in love, not in fear. I live in hope, not in loss. I live my life, not just exist.

A legend has been born. A destiny will be fulfilled. And at the end of it all, I will sing. All glory to God.

None of these lines are aspirations. All of them are facts the Word of God has already established about you. You are a plan, because the Lord knew His plans for you before you were formed. You are a solution, because you were prepared in advance for good works He had already prepared for you to walk in. You are royal, because He calls you a royal priesthood. You are a daughter, because you have been given the right to be called a child of God.

So here is the practice. Read the declaration out loud every morning this week, slowly enough that your spirit has time to receive each line as the fact it is. And before you give to anyone, ask yourself one question first: have I received today? If the answer is no, sit down with the Father before you do anything else. The orphan spirit trained you to give from empty. The daughter gives from full, and what comes out of you carries the spirit you gave from when you gave it.

A prayer for this episode

Abba. Father. I say those words and I want to mean them all the way down. Not just in my mind. In my body. In the part of me that still braces for the leaving.

I name the orphan spirit today, and I refuse to let it keep naming me. Replace it with the spirit of adoption. I lay down the scarcity, the urgency, the performance, the isolation and the hypervigilance, and I trade them for Your provision, Your peace, Your identity, Your belonging and Your trust.

Let me know, in the way that changes how I move through the world, that I am claimed. That I am permanent. That there is nothing I can do to be unclaimed. Teach me to receive. Teach me to rest. Teach me what it feels like to belong before I have earned anything.

Amen.

You are not an orphan scraping for approval.
You are an heir receiving what was always yours.
The Father never changed His mind about you.
You were never an orphan.
You have always been a daughter, and the One who has been here since before you were formed is the One who calls you home.
